Hail just hit my Denver-area home. How do I know if my roof is damaged, needs to be replaced?
Inspecting a home’s roof, no matter how steep or high off the ground, can be a dangerous proposition. We do not advise you to get on your roof unless you have proper safety gear and relevant roofing or construction experience.
If you need professional help to determine whether you have hail damaged on your roof, contact Adam’s Roofing for a full hail damage roof inspection.
Although you cannot fully determine the amount of hail damage on a roof from the ground, there are some signs that a trained eye can point out and help determine if there may be more damage up top. Perhaps it’s easy to take a safe look out of an upstairs bedroom window. Or, maybe you can check your outdoor shed’s roof a little easier than climbing up on the big roof.
That said, roof hail damage can be hard to spot for the average homeowner. Especially if you’ve never looked for it before. The downside to not identifying hail damage to your roof before it becomes vulnerable to roof leaks or more rapid deterioration of shingles or roofing materials.
Here is a summary of what to look for on your roof after a hail storm hits. The following images show small indentations as well as larger “splash down” areas of shingles on a typical home’s roof.
The presence of one or more of these may indicate a situation where the homeowner needs a full roof replacement, instead of a simple roof repair.
If it’s not easy or safe to view your roof directly, you may be able to check for other signs of collateral damage. Roof gutters, windowsills, exterior window screens, air conditioning or HVAC units, porch or patio lights, deck wood or other painted surfaces, may be damaged. These are places where, if there’s significant damage to the roof, there will most likely be damage to these things as well. If metal materials like and HVAC system or gutters are dented, there’s a good chance your roof should be inspected by a professional.
If any of the above spot checks prove to give you concern, we encourage you to call us to have your roof checked, at no charge. We’re in this business to help people like you. Far too often, our industry gets a bad reputation from the out-of-town, fly-by-night, untrained and inexperienced roofers that chase storms.
